FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS and ANSWERS ABOUT REFLEXOLOGY

Q: What is Reflexology and how does it work?

A. Reflexology is a holistic approach to assist the body to heal itself. It is based on the premise that the entire body, its organs, glands and systems, are mirrored on the feet. For example, the toe region represents the head and neck areas; the broader ball of the foot corresponds to the shoulders and rib cage. The foot narrows at the arch, just as the body narrows at the waist, and then broadens again at the heel, just the body broadens at the hips. The right foot represents the right side of the body, the left foot the left side, with the division occurring at the spine. A Reflexologist uses specific thumb and finger techniques to stimulate the 72, 000 nerve endings in each foot. Properly applied, physiological changes take place, causing the body to throw off toxins and release energy blockages that take the form of crystal deposits, tenderness or pain in the feet.

Q: What does Reflexology do for a person?

A. Reflexology?s goal is to trigger the mechanisms in the body to restore and maintain its natural state of equilibrium and health. Reflexology utilizes the theory of Zone Therapy. In acupuncture, the lines of vital energy are known as meridians; in reflexology they are zones. Both presume that imbalances in the body are caused by blockages in these energy lines. Treatment involves cleansing the obstructions by stimulating various reflex points along the lines. The benefits include reduction in tension and stress, increased vascular, neural and lymphatic circulation, and the releasing of toxins. Research has shown that blood pressure can actually decrease during a session. Clients use reflexology to alleviate or manage asthma, sinus problems, digestive disorders, inflammations, menstrual irregularities, pain, fatigue, inflammatory skin conditions and other imbalances. It is especially beneficial for circulatory problems.

Q: What does a Reflexologist do in a session?

A. A typical session would require approximately an hour, depending upon the size and condition of the feet, and the health of the client. The therapist usually begins and ends with relaxation techniques to relax the client, loosen the ankles and joints and "open up" the feet. Pressure will then be applied, using "thumb and finger walking", across the soles, sides and top of the feet following a specific protocol. Any areas of the feet where the client feels a sensation, be it tenderness or pain, may be addressed by other techniques.

Q: Who can receive Reflexology sessions?

A. Anyone can benefit from reflexology, including children, the elderly and the sick. Reflexology is safe and drug-free, so any person can begin reflexology sessions as soon as they wish. Reflexology can benefit those looking for holistic approaches that contribute to health and wellness.
