Shiatsu-Acupressure
Shiatsu is an Asian healing art originating from countries including China and Japan. Like acupuncture, it works on our body’s energetic system. It is based on the concept that the body has specific channels known as meridians, or energy pathways, through which energy flows. Things may happen that upset the smooth flow of energy in our body, causing blockages or stagnation in some areas, or deficiency in others. These blockages or weaknesses in turn may lead to physical symptoms, or psychological or emotional disturbances. Regular shiatsu treatments can help to discover patterns of imbalance in the body’s energy structure and restore harmony by moving and nourishing the free flow of energy and bringing back balance to our life.
Shiatsu can help…
It is effective in the treatment of many conditions including:
• Stress, anxiety, tension, depression, and emotional instability. • Musculo-skeletal conditions: neck, shoulder, back, and hip/leg pain. • Allergies • Some forms of arthritis and rheumatic complaints. • Digestive and intestinal disorders. • Circulatory, respiratory, and reproductive problems.
A Shiatsu session…
Can be very relaxing and is conducted in a very nurturing and supportive atmosphere. The average time for a session is one hour. It is recommended to wear loose comfortable clothing, as you will remain fully clothed. Have a snack or very light meal an hour before the session so that you are neither full nor hungry. Drink plenty of water after the session.
The treatment may include but is not limited to: touching, pressing or holding the body along meridians and/or acupressure points, stretching, external application of medicinal plant foods, heat or cold, and dietary and exercise recommendations. Cupping, gua sha, moxibustion, and other methods and modalities may also be used during the shiatsu session. Treatment may be done lying on a mat on the floor, on a massage table, or in a seated position.
