About us
A Brief History
The Maryland Center for Integrative Medicine was originally named the GBMC Alternative and Complementary Health Center. When it was first formed in 1997, it was affiliated with the Harvard Mind Body Center and was an official satellite program of Harvard. Services included individual sessions and small classes. We provided treatments and education that contributed to successful outcomes for people undergoing medical care for diverse problems, including cancer, fertility, and chronic pain syndromes. Although the center is no longer a Harvard affiliate, the practitioners who were trained at Harvard utilize the same information in a personal style.
In August of 2000, the GBMC Alternative and Complementary Center became the independently owned Maryland Center for Integrative Medicine, providing both in-patient and out-patient services at GBMC, including Acupuncture, Therapeutic Massage, Integrative Psychotherapy, Nutritional Counseling, and Energy Medicine. With a roster of more than 1300 patients, we were seeing an average of 200 patients a month. Many of our patients were, and still are, referred by doctors and nurses who work in the hospital. Some of our patients were, and still are, the doctors and nurses themselves. The Center kept growing in this new, but quickly expanding, field of medicine.
Our patient census continued to increase, and in August of 2001, we relocated to 658 Kenilworth Drive, Suite 206, just south of the Baltimore Beltway, in Towson, MD. We expanded our services in many areas including Holistic Medicine, Allergy Elimination Therapy, Hot Stone Massage and Asian Bodywork - Shiatsu/Acupressure. We continued growing and providing services at GBMC, and other hospitals, including Sinai, Hopkins and St Joseph’s and at our fabulous Center on Kenilworth Drive.
In June of 2002, St Joseph’s Hospital in Towson, Maryland, closed their Center for Health Enhancement, and many of the practitioners joined our staff. We have continued to expand our services, and have added Five Element Acupuncture and the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery to our services, as well as additional Massage Therapy disciplines such as Orthopedic Massage, Neuromuscular Therapy, Lymph Drainage Therapy, and Trager ® Movement Reeducation Therapy.
Our move to a larger space allowed us to grow and provide treatments to an increasing number of patients. In addition to providing services in our clinic and in-patient to those hospitalized, our highly trained staff continues to conduct classes and workshops. We participate in Health Expos, and provide education on topics related to health at local universities such as Towson University and Goucher College, to corporations such as Legg Mason, Fila, UPS, Coldwell Banker and The Baltimore Museum of Art and throughout the community. We have been featured on channel 13 and channel 45 and in Nursing Spectrum Magazine. The Maryland Center for Integrative Medicine has maintained a vision as a leader in the new medicine of the 21st century, providing the best of alternative, integrative, conventional and traditional health care in a patient-centered model of health and wellness.
