Healing Touch

Healing Touch
by Anne Dorsey, MS, RN, CS, CHTP

Healing Touch is…
Healing touch is an energy-based work that promotes self-healing and personal growth. The training program developed by Janet Mentgen, RN, is an internationally recognized certification program. Janet has learned from many great healers including Dr. Brugh Joy, Dr. Robert Jaffe, Rosalyn Bruyere, Delores Krieger, and Barbara Ann Breenan. Many practitioners are nurses and massage therapists who serve in settings including hospitals, labor and delivery rooms, accident scenes, homes, schools, hospices, and healing centers.

Who may benefit…
Healing Touch enhances traditional medical approaches to acute and chronic illnesses including the following and much more:
• Pain control
• Neck and Back problems
• Athletic Injuries
• Arthritis
• Headaches/Migraines
• Wound/Fracture Healing
• Childbirth/Postpartum
• Cancer

How it works…
In addition to our physical body we have an energetic body, referred to as the subtle energy field. Our popular language reflects that we are naturally tuned into the energy around us. For example, we describe feeling good or bad “vibes”. Descriptions of us as drained, disconnected, shocked, fried, turned off or unnerved, describe a stressed energetic system. The opposite is true when we say we are walking on air, turned on or charged up. Healing Touch enhances our energy system and re-establishes balance by releasing energy blocks. Stress, illness, accidents, surgery, and habitual negative thinking create these blocks. As tension is released from the body a deep sense of relaxation promotes circulation, cleanses stress hormones and quiets the mind. As additional oxygen, nutrients, and hormones circulate to the cells, the body builds healthy tissue and releases waste products. This supports our body’s ability to heal, fight infection, and modulate mood.

The work is experienced on a massage table, fully clothed. The practitioner moves his/her hands above the body to assess the nature of the energy field. A pendulum is often used to assess the energy centers of the body known as chakras. Various hand motions release the stress held in the body and re-establish energy flow. Recipients report feeling relaxed, calm, and lighter. This sense of well-being continues after the session. Many techniques can be used at home for self-care to reduce stress and pain and hasten healing.
